The good news is that as a convicted driver, it is entirely possible for you to get insured! However, it can be harder and more expensive to get convicted drivers car insurance because less insurers will cover you with a tainted record. As a young driver, this will be even more tricky. As you have less experience on the road, insurers may want to stay away from your risk. But not at Quote Detective. We’ll look at any claim or conviction you may have and help get you back behind the wheel!
What are the most common driving convictions?
In 2018, according to PassMeFast, the most common driving convictions in the UK are SP related (speeding), an IN10 conviction (driving without at least Third Party Only cover) and driving under the influence of either drink or drugs.
There are of course other driving related offences out there, but these are among the most common. Surprisingly, they are also some of the easiest to prevent in the first place. This is great because although we will try to help you out regardless of the situation, it will make things cheaper and easier if you avoid these charges altogether!
We will not be able to insure you if you are currently serving a ban for disqualification. If you give us a call, we can try and sort something out for when you return to the road.
What information will I need to provide to get a convicted drivers car insurance quote?
As always, you will need you driver’s licence, your National Insurance number and your postcode to get a quote. In this case, you will also need to provide us with all details relating to your offence(s) for us to get you a price. If you do not declare all of these convictions, your insurance may be invalid.
How long do points stay on my licence?
Normally, you could expect points disappear after 4 years although certain offences stay with you for up to 11 years. It is important to check what convictions you must declare when arranging insurance. You can do this via the unlock website.
Can I drive without insurance?
No, please do not do that! If you are caught driving without insurance, any future policy you try to take out will be more expensive. It could also land you in trouble with the police, a hefty fine and 6 points on your licence. What’s more, you could be banned from driving and your car seized and destroyed.
To avoid this, you must be insured at the minimum level of TPO in order to drive on British roads.
How do I find car insurance as a convicted driver?
Finding convicted drivers car insurance can be hard. But there are still insurers who will be able to offer you a quote based on all of your information, albeit more expensive. The quote will also depend on your age, the size of your vehicle and its engine and any modifications.
It is important to bear in mind that specialist insurers will usually be able to offer a better price than normal insurers. Insurers who do not normally cover this risk would rather not provide you with a quote at all. Therefore, it is worth searching around to find the best price before choosing the right policy for you.
What level of cover can I get?
As with all car and van insurance, you can get three different levels of cover.
These are fully comprehensive, third party, fire and theft and third party only.
TPO is the minimum level of cover needed to drive on British roads. Comprehensive will cover both the damage to you, and the damage to other people involved in the event of an accident. Third party, fire and theft provides you with the same level of cover as third party only with the bonus of covering your vehicle in case of fire or theft.
We understand that each conviction has its own set of unique circumstances. Therefore we will always take the time to study each case thoroughly so we can get the best quote possible for you. Building up an NCB will help to reduce the price of your convicted drivers car insurance premium. There are other steps you can take, such as driving a car with a small engine, as well as making an effort to pay due care and attention when on the roads in future. As specialists in convicted driver insurance, the experts at Quote Detective will always try to accommodate any situation you may find yourself in so give us a call on 0333 222 4005.
